Youtube comments - Google+ - the end is nigh

posted 9 Nov 2013, 04:32 by Mark Williams   [ updated 9 Nov 2013, 04:59 ]

Hi all
As most of you know I like to share my radio related experiments via the medium of video, I choose this medium because in 99.9% of the time its much easier to describe a process or an image/event with a video.  I chose YouTube in October 2006 as the place to start sharing my videos.

Well the last month or so I've been hassled by a bright red banner as soon as I watch any video, the banner says "Connect to google+ to maintain access to new comments" I've just clicked the X button and closed it, I'm fine without it thanks.  A week or so later I click on reply to a comment and the video stopped and a box popped up asking me what name I want to use for google+ ? NO NO NO I don't want google+ I close this popup and a green banner now appears on the top of the video saying

"OK, we'll ask you again later"  Well Youtube/Google my answer will always be the same, I don't want google+ and I opt out, I don't want to take part.  I don't want to be part of your social networking bullshit, I'm not on facebook or twitter why would I want to be part of your trash/prism/spying contraption.

Its like saying" you can't walk down our street unless you wear these red shoes" Well.. I choose to change my route and walk down another street. What is this? the fourth Reich ?

So we are at a point in youtube were I cannot reply to people commenting on my own videos, I cannot comment on my friends videos.  I can imagine eventually either I won't be able to even edit my videos or sign in for that matter, unless they automatically think its cool to sign me up......

I've enjoyed my time on youtube, I've seen some amazing things and I've meet some amazing people who share the same interest in the medium of video but I think its time to draw a line and call it a day and get out while I still have control of my own content/channel.

As I type this I look at my channel, its at 1144 subscribers! I never imagined there would be 500 people interested in watching!  I didn't hit the million views coming close at 965,531.

If there is another online video hosting site that fits the bill I will probably shift over and leave youtube/google to do what it does.

Its been a pleasure to share and interact with you all.

73 and best wishes from Norfolk UK

No enthusiasm - Antennas - Adsence woes.

posted 5 Nov 2013, 04:36 by Mark Williams   [ updated 5 Nov 2013, 04:42 ]

Hey all
No updates for some time eh.. Well I've not had any have any spare enthusiasm to throw at the hobby this last month.

All the antennas are down or lowered because of the "storm" we were expecting a week or so ago, its been raining and cold ever since and I've not bothered putting them back up.  Autumn is well and truly here in Norfolk and it won't be long till winter, last night saw the lowest measure temperature here of 1.5 degrees Centigrade.

I have mag loops to make.. I need a few more parts to be sure I have everything before I start, I still have a few(lots) of capacitors that need building into something, I think I need to get some more pipe of some sort.

Ah, google what have you done... As well as making youtube crap you've now helped me even further by "sunsetting AdSense" for Google Sites and silently removed any revenue from my website.
Have a read for your self Thanks Google.. just what I needed. :(

I didn't build this site to earn my millions I built it for somewhere to post/blog pictures and videos of my adventures/learning curve in amateur radio, that being said I have to buy the parts and materials I need to build these things.. The adsence money was that money, the money that gets ploughed back into which it came. For instance, my youtube channel, its revenue bought a gopro HD camera to make even better content for youtube.

Soon be Christmas.

Bah humbug

Daft antenna experiment incoming

Yeah, this is very daft, I've proved its worth once, lets see if I can break any personal bests on how many PCPM's(paper clips per mile) I can manage
This might take some time.....
Mmm.. what band..

Making things from things

posted 23 Aug 2013, 04:25 by Mark Williams   [ updated 23 Aug 2013, 05:29 ]

Hey all
Another few projects at least started and another few finished!

I don't know if the rest of you constructors/makers out there get the same sensation when you have completed a project, even though you've made it yourself and obviously you've seen every step of the way, even through you know what the end product will be(ish) from your mental concept and you get to test all the functionality along on the way excitement still grows as the project nears completion, all ready to be played with, with all the functions working perfectly etc.  It feels a bit like Christmas!

Well I've nearly (95%) finished my hands free kit in the van, its all working, just need to source a boom for the mic and add the DTMF pad.

Just started the FT meter last night, its so simple within 15 minutes of deciding to start I had a semi working model.
Here's a sneak peak

Anyway I won't get them finished if I carry on here!
I wonder if my tea has brewed yet..

The next loop?

posted 18 Aug 2013, 14:54 by markbeermonster@hotmail.com   [ updated 18 Aug 2013, 15:24 ]

Hi all
The first loop was just how I like it, I had every thing I needed here, I just needed to add some enthusiasm and bingo, the first loop was created there on my garden table in a few hours.

The second loop took ages which I didn't like, I couldn't just "get on with it, invent/make it up" as I went along etc.  I had to wait on parts which took ages and stopped creative spurts in their tracks.

I would like to build a 160/80m loop next. With the size of this loop its not going to be a portable item but it still needs to be rotatable, so as to be able to turn it away from ground wave QRM while still receiving those sky-wave stations.

I think this time I will wait till I've collected everything I need with a few extra bits and bobs in case one line of thinking fails I would like an instant backup instead of dragging the project on.

It's going to be big!

P.S. i'm really missing my 320, I can't wait to get it back from repair.
To be continued.....

Hands free at last..

Hey all

Why didn't I build one ages ago? What a wally!
I remember when I built a FT817 headset from a cheap computer headset that there wasn't that much to the circuit and probably got all the bits I need. Well today I pulled my finger out and after a few hours research I managed to come up with this.
Its still a birds nest on a piece of vero board but it works, I managed to raise a fellow ham on a local 2 meter repeater for a quick contact, It received a good report. I've just got to find a suitable switch and a box to put all the gubbins in its not very handsfree at the moment having "ptt wires"!.

I might have to sort out some kind of DTMF keypad or another socket for the original Yaesu DTMF microphone to plug in somewhere so I can still use all the functions on the excellent GB3JX repeater.

More information on the Project page
Hope all is well with you and yours

The loop controller is nearly finished

posted 10 Aug 2013, 15:17 by markbeermonster@hotmail.com

Hi all
Remember the ugly loop?
Well the tuning was so sharp it wasn't a nice thing to operate. Well... I've built this gizmo
I'll shoot a video to explain exactly what this is for and how useful it will be while I'm /portable.
Yes that is a solar panel and yes it has two speeds, slow and slower.

Kings Lynn Radio Rally

posted 4 Aug 2013, 09:26 by markbeermonster@hotmail.com   [ updated 4 Aug 2013, 14:50 ]

Hey all

What a fantastic radio rally, definitely the best rally of the year so far, amazing weather, great stalls with great stall holders and most of all bargains bargains bargains!

I've managed to purchase pretty much everything I need to make a few loops, probably till I'm all looped out.

I met a really nice ham today, one of the good guys, really friendly and one of those rare guys were everything he said was interesting and also a true gentleman.

I'm going to be busy for some time...

sneak peak at some of the bargains?

oh go on then...
I'm no a clairvoyant but I foresee loops.....
I'd bought a couple of really nice capacitors from this stall holder first thing when I arrived, a quite a few laps of the rally later and I stopped on the the same stall and had a look at some more of the capacitors, He suggested I take them all and named his price, I had to take him up on the most generous offer.

I also bought some more goodies but more about that another time.

Shocking stuff!

Shocking exactly!
I managed to capture footage of the electrical storm that blasted through Norfolk England yesterday.
Here is the abridged video and an amazing shot of the pure power unleashed.

The noise was incredible and is not really done justice on the video.

No playing with bits of metal outside today

Hmm, now that new loop, where was I....
